5 Reasons Why You Should Visit Portugal

If you’re planning to travel to Europe this year, you should add Portugal to your itinerary. Whether you’re looking for European history, delicious food, or beautiful beaches, Portugal has something for everyone. So if you’re on the fence about visiting Portugal, here are five reasons why you should definitely plan that trip ASAP!

1) The food

The food is phenomenal in Portugal. One of the things that I loved most about my time there was experiencing the food. There are so many options when it comes to cuisine, but they all taste fresh and homemade which is hard to find outside of Portugal. It also means that it's super affordable.

I have spent quite a bit of time traveling to Portugal for business and pleasure over the last few years. After hearing from friends who had visited how much they loved this country, I finally took their advice and booked my first trip last year. While I can't say for sure whether or not it will be my new favorite country (I'm really loving Iceland at the moment), one thing that's for sure is that I'll be visiting again soon because Lisbon has become one of my favorite cities ever!

2) The history

Pardon my lack of eloquence, but Portugal's history is colorful and deeply entwined with the other great civilizations of Europe. It boasts an incredible Medieval past with influence from Great Britain, Ancient Rome, and early Greece. Consequently, the country offers visitors rich architecture that includes cathedrals and castles alongside palaces, churches, monasteries, villages and even industrial heritage sites.

3) The landscapes

The landscape is one of the most stunning features of the country. From mountain ranges to rolling hills and villages, you will never find a moment where you are bored by what's in front of you.

It is no wonder that so many film directors chose Portugal as their backdrop for shooting many famous movies. One fantastic example is Danny Boyle's Sunshine. The series was filmed in various locations including Santa Maria da Feira, which is just northwest of Porto.

4) The weather

The weather in Portugal is very mild because of the country's oceanic climate, with average monthly temperatures ranging from 68°F to 72°F and an annual average of 58°F. Weather patterns are mainly influenced by altitude, proximity to the coast, and relief. The Portuguese have a term for this type of weather: Quente e seco or hot and dry. A consequence of the mild weather is that it's possible to spend extended periods outdoors without heavy clothing and still be comfortable. Not having cold winters means that outdoor swimming pools are open year-round, giving people in Europe the opportunity to enjoy some unusual winter activities.

5) The wine

Portugal has a very rich and long history when it comes to wine production. With roots going back as far as the Roman era, this country has contributed a great deal to world wine production. Wine tasting is so popular in Portugal that most of the visitors to this beautiful country are on a mission to get buzzed by all the quality vintages. Here are five reasons why you should visit Portugal and taste some of their wines.

1) You can taste high-quality wines at low prices - In terms of relative wine prices, Portugal is one of the cheapest places you could go for wine tasting, with many bottles costing well under €10.
