See the Basilica Cistern

 Located in the old city center of Istanbul, the Basilica Cistern is an ancient underground chamber filled with water and the remains of a mysterious bygone era. Built in the 6th century, the structure was originally built to store water for the nearby Great Palace of Constantinople. It remained unknown to the public until 1545 when it was discovered by the Ottoman court. Today, the Basilica Cistern is one of Istanbul’s most popular tourist attractions. The highlight of this subterranean world is the two ornate Medusa head columns that stand in the center of the chamber. These heads have been there since antiquity and are thought to have been brought from an ancient temple in Libya. The atmosphere of the chamber is mysterious and evocative, and the soft light that fills the room gives it a surreal quality. Visitors can walk among the 336 marble columns, take photos and marvel at the engineering feat achieved over a millennium ago. There are also two galleries located on either side of the chamber where you can buy souvenirs, learn about the history of the Cistern, and relax in a café.
